Ingredients

For the patties
  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend) Feel free to use frozen ground beef but make sure it is fully thawed before mixing.
  • 1/2 cup plain or seasoned breadcrumbs Using seasoned breadcrumbs will enhance the flavor.
  • 1 large egg, beaten Provides binding for the patties.
  • 1 large onion, finely diced For the patties.
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
For the gravy
  • 3 tablespoons butter Melt to sauté the onions.
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour To thicken the gravy.
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth You can substitute with chicken or vegetable broth.
  • 1 cup heavy cream For a lighter option, swap with milk.
  • 1 large onion, sliced For extra flavor in the gravy.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper until just incorporated.
  2. Form the beef mixture into 6 to 8 oval patties of even size and thickness. Allow them to rest while you prepare the gravy base.
Cooking
  1. In a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat, brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden. Remove the patties and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onion until softened.
  3. Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes, then whisk in beef broth, heavy cream, and garlic powder until smooth.
  4. Arrange the browned patties back into the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
  5. Cover tightly with a lid or foil and bake at 350°F for 45 minutes.
  6. Remove the cover and continue baking for an additional 15 minutes until the gravy is bubbly and thickened.
  7. Remove the skillet from the oven and allow the dish to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
