Main Ingredients
  • 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium shallots, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage leaves, chopped
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 1 cup grated cheese (such as Gruyère or Parmesan) Choose your favorite cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter for greasing the baking dish

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, melt a bit of butter and add the chopped shallots. Sauté until soft and translucent.
  3. Add the minced garlic and chopped sage to the skillet, cooking until fragrant.
  4. In a bowl, combine the sautéed mixture with the heavy cream and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Grease a baking dish and layer the butternut squash slices at the bottom.
  6. Pour the creamy mixture over the squash, making sure all slices are covered.
  7. Sprinkle the grated cheese generously on top.
Baking
  1. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes until the gratin is golden and bubbling.

Notes

Best served warm. Try topping with breadcrumbs for added texture, or incorporate spices like nutmeg or cayenne for more flavor.
