Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with olive oil or butter.
- In a skillet, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain excess fat. Stir in minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and optional paprika for added flavor.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Assembly
- Layer half the sliced potatoes on the bottom of the greased baking dish.
- Spread half of your beef mixture over the potatoes.
- Pour half of the sauce over the beef and sprinkle with 1 cup of cheddar cheese.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef, and sauce. Top with the rest of the cheddar cheese, plus mozzarella if using.
Baking
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven at 350°F until heated through. Can freeze for up to 3 months.
