Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients
  

For the Marinade and Sauce
  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye) Can substitute with flank steak or chicken
  • 5 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce, divided
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional) Can substitute with additional soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
For the Stir-Fry
  • 1 large onion, sliced

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon soy sauce, oyster sauce, grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame oil. Toss in the beef strips and let them marinate for 10-15 minutes.
Cooking
  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized. Season with salt and pepper, then remove from the pan and set aside.
  2. In the same pan, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over high heat. Add the marinated beef strips and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch. Pour the sauce over the beef and let it simmer until it thickens.
  4. Add the sautéed onions back into the pan, stirring to combine. Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

Garnish with sliced green onions or sesame seeds. Best served with steamed jasmine rice or stir-fried vegetables.
